The Best Kids Outdoor Gear for Cold Weather

November 11, 2024 by Claire Leave a Comment

We were gifted XTRATUF TUFS toddler boots to test out and review on the blog. As always, all opinions expressed are our own.

🎶 It’s that time of year 🎶… when I start to think about how I’m going to fit six sets of snow gear on our coat rack, and I think that I should reallyyy buy a washable rug for the entryway.

Living in Minnesota, we get to experience all the seasons in their natural beauty–and we also need all the gear to do that. I’ve tried out quite a few brands of kids’ gear through the years. Some have lasted and some haven’t worked well/have needed replacing after a kid or two. I’ve tried different price points (both purchased by myself and via hand-me-downs) and found where we can economize versus where it pays off to pay more.… Read More »

Healthy Finds We Buy from Costco (as a From-Scratch Family)

October 7, 2024 by Claire Leave a Comment

healthy-costco-finds-titleJust before adding our fourth baby to our family, Eric and I treated ourselves to a Costco membership. Somewhat begrudgingly, as I like to think of myself as a small business, artisanal goods kind of person—and Costco is anything but that—but you need to be practical with a big family. We go through certain foods and household goods SO quickly that it just makes sense to buy them in bulk!

Eric has celiac disease, so a lot of prepared foods are off the table for us. I also prefer to buy organic when possible and stick to whole food ingredients. Even within this space, we’ve found that we can save a lot of money by stocking up on certain staples at Costco that we’d otherwise be buying at Whole Foods or the co-op every week (at a much higher cost per unit).… Read More »

How We’re Using & Preserving Garden Produce This Summer

August 5, 2024 by Claire Leave a Comment

It’s that time of the year when I have too many zucchinis in my fridge, my kids are looking forward to back-to-school and we’re all reallyyyy tired of the hot, humid weather (which feels like living in a sauna). As I type this it’s almost pitch black outside at 5pm, thundering every 10 seconds and I’m crossing my fingers we do NOT get hail with this storm. I like my roof the way it is.

Anyways, I can’t do much about the weather or five weeks left until the school year, but the zucchini can be dealt with. We are growing a heap of different things in our gardens this year. While some of it hasn’t been so successful–sorry, jalapeño peppers that were shaded out by the tomatoes–much of it is thriving.

If you’re looking for some veggie-heavy recipes to use up excessive garden produce, I hope you find these ideas helpful! We don’t can, so nothing on this list involves an afternoon spent next to the hot stove with a mess of glass jars and lids.… Read More »

July Meal Plan (Gluten-Free & Kid-Friendly)

July 22, 2024 by Claire Leave a Comment

Somehow it’s the last full week of July and let’s just forget eeeeeverything related to American politics at the moment and say I’m so excited for fall! The back-to-school prep and routines, fall foods, fall traditions like apple picking and pumpkin carving, the cooler weather… yes please.

One thing I will miss about summer, however, is our garden. Whilst we will hopefully continue to harvest some foods (squash, a second crop of beans, kale) into the fall, most of it dies back in the first cold snap. We’ve definitely been taking advantage of the fresh produce in our daily meals lately.… Read More »

Our Annual Garden Progress {2024}

July 15, 2024 by Claire Leave a Comment

Let it be known that I am not any kind of gardening professional or aspiring homesteader. I grew up with a mom who always had a veggie patch, worked in a greenhouse during college, and simply enjoy eating local food 🙂 Because let’s face it, no tomato from the grocery can ever compare to one picked five minutes ago in your garden!

This year we put in our first raised beds in our “new” house–we’ve been here since March 2023–and thanks to a cool, rainy spring and start to summer, our plants are thriving. We’ve picked dozens of strawberries, plenty of kale and lettuce, the green beans are starting to ripen by the handful and the zucchini are quickly multiplying.… Read More »
