We recently returned from a weeklong trip to Boulder—where Eric grew up—and I’ll be sharing some highlights over the next few weeks. Eric and I spent a LOT of time in the Boulder area in college. However, we’ve only visited twice with kids. Our itinerary looks a bit different with a baby, 2-, 4-, and 6-year-old than it did in our early 20s!
Our first outing of the trip was to the WOW Children’s Museum in Lafayette. The two older kids enjoyed it during our last visit in 2022, and they were excited to go back. I was worried it might be a bit “young” for my 6-year-old, but he found plenty of things to do!
Our WOW Children’s Museum Review

Indoors, they have a huge pirate ship play structure, a ride-in car, play kitchen, building supplies, and many science learning exhibits. Everything from outer space, to light and colors, to chairs you can operate with pulleys. They also have a beautiful flower garden outside and a mud kitchen with running water.

There’s a gated play area for 0-3 year olds with safe places to climb, light displays, mirrors, and large (read: non-chokeable) toys. You can push a stroller right through the museum—so it’s truly family-friendly for all ages.
My mother-in-law noted that it was a great size for keeping track of kids, with two huge open rooms side-by-side. Some museums we’ve visited have multiple floors with many rooms. That layout makes it hard to keep track of my independent elementary schooler while also staying close to his toddler and baby brothers.
WOW also has a nut-free eating area with tables, chairs, and high chairs. We found it clean and spacious. I love places where we can bring our own food, as buying snacks or drinks for four kids gets expensive!
All in all, it was a morning well spent. If you’re visiting the Boulder area with kids, we give WOW Children’s Museum a positive review and recommend checking it out!
