Osoji: A Deep Clean to Welcome the New Year

January 13, 2025 by Claire Leave a Comment

Last month, in the midst of my own major post-holiday declutter, I learned a new-to-me term: osoji, which Google tells me literally means “big clean” in Japanese. It’s not a new tradition at all, however–it dates back to circa 800 A.D. At that time, the Imperial Court was ritually cleansed of soot at the end of each year to welcome the deity of the new year (source, source).

Keeping my home free from unused items does have a spiritual component for me. It feels respectful to my family to maintain a decluttered home in which the kids can play and Eric and I can efficiently live our lives. It feels respectful to the environment to thoughtfully pass on items we don’t need, and to receive an annual reminder to be intentional about the things we bring into our home. I even have more mental space to focus on what matters in life and to be intentional about my own spiritual practice when we aren’t overwhelmed by unnecessary stuff.… Read More »

The Four Gift Rule for Christmas: Why & How

October 17, 2024 by Claire Leave a Comment

I am a minimalist. I also have four kids, three of whom are not minimalists (the other one is three weeks old, so I’m not sure about his aesthetic yet). My olders love their toys, books, art supplies, random bits and bobs they’ve accumulated from birthday parties or the dentist’s office, school crafts… an endless array of things that are meaningful to them. C’est la vie!

However, we are six people in a four-bedroom house–and Eric works remotely, needing a full-time office space–so space is limited. To this end, and given our generous extended family, we realized a few years ago that we needed to cut back on gifts (both given to our own kids, and things we all receive). The stereotypical American Christmas is focused on the presents, but we needed and wanted something different.… Read More »

20 Ways to Slow Down and Live Offline

July 8, 2024 by Claire Leave a Comment

I’ve been taking more social media breaks lately, which has been so good for my mental health. I’ll log off of Instagram or Facebook for a few days (or both) and not stress about keeping up with what’s happening online. It feels absolutely freeing to only think about life offline for a bit!

I also just finished Fiona Ferris’ latest book, 100 Ways to Live a Soft, Calm Life. Much of her advice involves getting offline and immersing your senses in the real world. I thought about that as I was picking raspberries at my mom’s house this morning–how (especially for kids/teens) that often seems like the exception rather than the rule these days, to be fully present in the physical world and undistracted by even the thought of your phone or device.… Read More »

Decluttering Layer by Layer

February 1, 2024 by Claire Leave a Comment

Good afternoon! The two youngers are napping, E and e are at a ski lesson and I’m feeling a bit under the weather, so I’ve confined myself to the couch until my headache goes away at least. It’s 45 degrees and beautifully sunny out, and the birds are singing like it’s spring–so it’s not all bad!

Last weekend we stopped by Goodwill with a few items that we no longer needed. A shower caddy that kept falling off of the shower head, an easel my kids didn’t use, an old side table. The bags contained an assortment of Eric and my clothing that didn’t fit properly and some hand-me-downs for the boys we’d been given that didn’t suit them. We also had a bag with some old kitchen tools, books, an old nonstick pan, and some vacuum bags.… Read More »

Living a Balanced Life: Make It Do…

June 8, 2023 by Claire Leave a Comment

Use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without. I’m very into the idea of cutting back lately. Not just in the obvious ways (buy what’s on sale! Ask around for hand-me-downs!) but also questioning what I feel like I/we NEED to buy for one reason or another.

When I was little, my mom was quite frugal. Not because my family was struggling, thankfully, but because my parents were good stewards of their money to save for what was important to them: funding our college accounts, living in a suburb with well-ranked schools, traveling to Europe every two years.… Read More »
