Osoji: A Deep Clean to Welcome the New Year

January 13, 2025 by Claire Leave a Comment

Last month, in the midst of my own major post-holiday declutter, I learned a new-to-me term: osoji, which Google tells me literally means “big clean” in Japanese. It’s not a new tradition at all, however–it dates back to circa 800 A.D. At that time, the Imperial Court was ritually cleansed of soot at the end of each year to welcome the deity of the new year (source, source).

Keeping my home free from unused items does have a spiritual component for me. It feels respectful to my family to maintain a decluttered home in which the kids can play and Eric and I can efficiently live our lives. It feels respectful to the environment to thoughtfully pass on items we don’t need, and to receive an annual reminder to be intentional about the things we bring into our home. I even have more mental space to focus on what matters in life and to be intentional about my own spiritual practice when we aren’t overwhelmed by unnecessary stuff.… Read More »

Decluttering Layer by Layer

February 1, 2024 by Claire Leave a Comment

Good afternoon! The two youngers are napping, E and e are at a ski lesson and I’m feeling a bit under the weather, so I’ve confined myself to the couch until my headache goes away at least. It’s 45 degrees and beautifully sunny out, and the birds are singing like it’s spring–so it’s not all bad!

Last weekend we stopped by Goodwill with a few items that we no longer needed. A shower caddy that kept falling off of the shower head, an easel my kids didn’t use, an old side table. The bags contained an assortment of Eric and my clothing that didn’t fit properly and some hand-me-downs for the boys we’d been given that didn’t suit them. We also had a bag with some old kitchen tools, books, an old nonstick pan, and some vacuum bags.… Read More »

A Decluttering Journey: Relationships, Old & New

June 27, 2022 by Claire Leave a Comment

When I searched “dinner party” in stock images, I meant something a bit more social-looking, but since I’m already SO excited for fall, I picked this one! What a cute little pumpkin 🙂

I feel like it’s a bit uncouth to refer to the process of taking stock of relationships as “decluttering” – but I wanted to file these thoughts away under my journey to creating more white space in my life.

We need companionship like we need food, water, air, and shelter. It’s one of the lowest tiers in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, the need for love and belonging.… Read More »

A Decluttering Journey: Room to Breathe

June 26, 2022 by Claire Leave a Comment

During middle and high school, there were a lot of problems in my life. My parents’ divorce and subsequent family tensions, untreated anxiety, academic pressure and low self-esteem–many things weren’t ideal.

But one thing that I look back on and appreciate is how I made room to breathe in my life, despite all the external influences that told me not to.

In middle school, instead of being involved in 1000 clubs and activities, I spent most of my free time playing with my sister, on the phone with my best friend N, or writing in my journal.… Read More »

A Decluttering Journey: How Much Do We Actually Need?

June 10, 2022 by Claire Leave a Comment

Recently I read a lovely book, The Joy of Less by Francine Jay. One of the key ideas from the book is that we use 20% of our stuff 80% of the time. What does that say about the other 80% of our stuff?

Our family has been extremely busy lately working on some big projects. I hope to share the outcome of those with you soon! But part of the work has involved not just decluttering superfluous, unused items but also many aspirational things. Pieces of who I used to be and who I wanted to be.… Read More »
