My Favorite Reads of 2022 (Part 2)

December 7, 2022 by Claire Leave a Comment

Earlier this year I shared my favorite books from the first half of the year. Amazingly, I’m nearly finished with book #34 of 2022… so now that 2022 is nearly over, there’s definitely more to share from my reading list favorites.

My library card and old kindle (given to me in 2015, how much longer do you think it will last? :P) have both gotten quite the workout this year! Reading is a main form of self-care and an escape for me. I generally don’t watch TV as I’m a very sensitive person and most shows leave me feeling “off” emotionally, so if I’m going to escape it’s going to be into a book or the archives of a favorite blog.

(Tell me I’m not the only one who’s weird about TV, haha? I genuinely don’t enjoy most shows or movies, and it has nothing to do with limiting screen time.)… Read More »

My Favorite 2022 Reads (So Far!)

July 11, 2022 by Claire Leave a Comment

We’re only halfway through the year, but I’ve somehow already met my goal of reading 20 books! I’m rather impressed with myself.

Part of the reason I’ve read so much this year–as I told my therapist–is that I’ve given myself permission to only choose books that feel like self-care to me this year. At this exact moment I love lighthearted nonfiction books about domesticity, femininity, minimalism, organization, and the occasional parenting book.… Read More »

11 Must-Read Crunchy Books for Moms

January 3, 2022 by Claire Leave a Comment

If you want to do things differently than your parents, you need a good roadmap. These classic crunchy mom books helped me create mine. Most people can probably relate to the feeling of wanting to raise their kids differently than their parents did. As much as I love my parents, the 90s and 2000s attitudes towards kids’ mental health, achievement, motivation and work/life balance are not ones I care to raise my children with. (See here and here for my takes on college.)… Read More »

17 Self-Care Books to Nourish Your Soul

October 19, 2018 by Claire Leave a Comment

self-care books title imageIf you know me personally, likely you know that I’m hopelessly obsessed with self-care and self-improvement books. While I do enjoy a good piece of fiction–you might also be familiar with my Lord of the Rings obsession–inspirational nonfiction is my jam.

But the self-care/improvement section of your library or bookstore can be tricky to navigate. For every good book, there are ten boring, unoriginal collections of clichés. And it’s impossible to tell which are the good ones from the covers. They all claim that they’ll change your life starting on page 1–which definitely isn’t true.… Read More »

The Ultimate Sustainable Agriculture Reading List

July 27, 2017 by Claire 6 Comments

Want to know more about the food industry and its environmental impact, but don't know where to start? Here are some awesome book recommendations to get you started on your sustainable food journey.Want to know more about the food industry and its environmental impact, but don’t know where to start? There’s a mind-boggling array of literature out there right now that purports to be giving you the straight story about the stuff in your grocery cart–but that literature isn’t all created equal. From diet books to documentaries, from Instagrammers to independent studies, where’s a food industry newbie to start?

Well, literature about the food industry–and really just about food in general–is my genre of choice. It started my sophomore year of high school, when I picked up a copy of Animal, Vegetable, Miracle to read for a class project. But that book totally hooked me. What I learned about the food industry, and about how far removed I was from the food I ate, from those three hundred-some pages ignited a passion inside of me that I didn’t know existed. I had to know more.… Read More »
