Our Annual Garden Progress {2024}

July 15, 2024 by Claire Leave a Comment

Let it be known that I am not any kind of gardening professional or aspiring homesteader. I grew up with a mom who always had a veggie patch, worked in a greenhouse during college, and simply enjoy eating local food 🙂 Because let’s face it, no tomato from the grocery can ever compare to one picked five minutes ago in your garden!

This year we put in our first raised beds in our “new” house–we’ve been here since March 2023–and thanks to a cool, rainy spring and start to summer, our plants are thriving. We’ve picked dozens of strawberries, plenty of kale and lettuce, the green beans are starting to ripen by the handful and the zucchini are quickly multiplying.… Read More »

Eco-Friendly Diapering & Compostable Baby Wipes for Beginners

April 9, 2024 by Claire Leave a Comment

cloth-diapers-compostable-baby-wipes-titleI was gifted Natracare compostable baby wipes for our family to try out. I was not obligated to share a review, and all opinions expressed are my own.

I’m on round three of cloth diapering my babies. I would 100% recommend it to anyone who’s serious about taking their passion for sustainability (or frugality) into the parenting phase of life. There is definitely a learning curve, however! That’s why I’m writing this post: to share my best tips for eco-friendly diapering and wipes with you.… Read More »

Living a Balanced Life: Use It Up, Wear It Out…

April 21, 2023 by Claire Leave a Comment

…Make it do or do without. I am full of inspiration to be thriftier and in the process more eco-friendly, as I’m reading a wonderful book right now called The Simple Home.

We cook (mostly) from scratch, take hand-me-downs, use up our food stores/art supplies/toiletries etc, and try to buy sales for everything from food to clothing to home improvement items. But there are many ways we could live a more frugal life and make better use of the money and resources available to us.… Read More »

Wardrobe Revamp, Part 3: Knickey Underwear Review

March 3, 2022 by Claire Leave a Comment

Just to clarify (hehe), this post is NOT sponsored by Knickey. I’m simply sharing a new-to-me product that I’ve tried and want to review for you!

Update 10/2023: My underwear purchased for this review is still going strong 18 months later. It basically looks like new! No holes, fraying, or stretched out elastic… Knickey is definitely a high-quality brand.

Last year, I decided to update my wardrobe for my new mom life. I sold or donated most of the things I bought in high school or college, and I’m in the process of rebuilding my wardrobe and refining my style to fit a 27-year-old mom of two.

However, while focusing on finding tops, jeans, dresses, etc. that I love–for a while I kind of forgot about the most essential wardrobe item: underwear. And yes, my Modest Millie self is totally cringing that I’m actually writing about this–but I think it will be helpful to anyone out there who finds themself in a similar, underwear-less situation.… Read More »

Why We Drink Raw Milk – Benefits of Raw Milk

December 21, 2021 by Claire Leave a Comment

Raw milk?! I know. If you’d mentioned raw milk to me a year ago, I would have shuddered at the thought of drinking such a risky, potentially sickening beverage. After all, when you Google raw milk, all of the first results are government webpages warning you about how raw milk can contain horrible bacteria and viruses that will probably kill you!

Proponents of raw milk have dissected some of the studies that back up these safety conclusions and came to very different results (see also here for an analysis by one of my favorite nutrition experts). But I’m not here to argue with you on the safety of drinking raw milk. Disclaimer: I’m not a medical professional or dairy industry expert. Whether or not you feel comfortable drinking raw milk and assuming the potential risks is a choice that’s entirely up to you. … Read More »
