A Decluttering Journey: The Purpose of Minimalism

May 14, 2022 by Claire Leave a Comment

Sometimes you just have those moments when a concept you’ve been trying to understand for a while just clicks.

Recently I had one of those moments. Life is very busy and overwhelming lately. We’ve had lots of things to do and places to go, lots of thinking about the future, lots of decisions to make. It feels like I’ve been going nonstop since getting back from Hawaii in mid-April, honestly.… Read More »

Decluttering Storytime: My Saved Instagram Posts, 2017-Present

November 16, 2021 by Claire Leave a Comment

I actually have a few reflections I’ve written as I’ve been decluttering our house that I’m planning to share this month! Yay for some writing inspo again. It’s been a drought over here for a while.

Last night I was looking for a saved Instagram post. It was a video of a bucket full of fluffy white kittens set to cute music. (I’m obsessed with cats, for the uninitiated, although I can’t keep one because my husband has allergies. So videos have to substitute for the real thing.)

Anyways, I thought I hadn’t saved many Instagram posts over the years. I didn’t remember saving too many.… Read More »

A Decluttering Journey: The First 100 Items

October 10, 2021 by Claire Leave a Comment

I recently read two books that inspired me to tackle the clutter around our house in a thorough, maintain-able way.

The first was The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning. Now, I’m not planning on dying anytime soon, but in the book, she writes that you shouldn’t wait until you’re contemplating death to part with the things that aren’t serving you. Maybe you’re undergoing another life change like divorce, downsizing, or (in our case) contemplating an international move. Whatever the case, life is lighter and freer without the unused excess.

The other book was The Day the World Stops Shopping. It is a fantastic read that inspired significant personal reflection for me and my relation to things. It feels like a foundational book for anti-consumerism in the same way that The Omnivore’s Dilemma or In Defense of Food were foundational books for the anti-big ag/sustainable ag movements.… Read More »

Simplifying My Online Presence: Update Part 1

May 14, 2018 by Claire Leave a Comment

Updates on my quest to downsize my online presence! I deleted more Facebook friends, installed a newsfeed eradicator, and removed Instagram from my smartphone. Plus, what's next? It’s been a little while since I wrote about simplifying my online presence for the first time and since I reflected on what Facebook “friends” are and why we have so many. (Also, I just noticed that Disqus has eaten all of the comments on that second post–what a shame! People had some great points to make about the pros and cons of Facebook. I promise I didn’t delete all of your lovely comments <3)

Since then I’ve accomplished a few more things on my digital minimizing to-do list, including a big one this weekend.… Read More »

Thoughts on Facebook Friends

April 11, 2018 by Claire Leave a Comment

clear-mcdonald-lake-glacierA couple of months ago I started minimizing my online life. I decided about a month later to continue sharing personal posts on this blog. However, I do try to keep my family and friends’ identities protected and I haven’t stopped scaling back on social media, particularly Facebook.

Besides deleting my YouTube, Google+, and two Twitter accounts, I mentioned that I have unfriended more than five hundred people on Facebook over the past few years. Now almost six hundred, in fact. I wasn’t a popularity queen in high school or college either. When I look back at some the names of people I’ve deleted in my Facebook data, I don’t even know who they are.… Read More »
