15 Easter Basket Gift Ideas that Aren’t Junk

March 19, 2024 by Claire Leave a Comment

In defense of cheap or “junky” Easter basket fillers, I loved getting that type of gift in my baskets growing up. Light-up pens, scented erasers, keychains, tiny notepads, rubber balls, etc. My sister and I were hyper-organized kids who appreciated all those little treats and used them up.

My children? They’ve barely met a plastic toy they haven’t broken within a month. Tiny things get lost underneath the sofa, in the car or washing machine. They’re not trying to be destructive, but they play hard and it shows with cheap toys. Then they’re sad when something is broken beyond repair and needs to be tossed. So I try not to buy things that will end up in the trashcan sooner rather than later.… Read More »

12 4-Year-Old Boy Gift Ideas (that are Tech-Free)

October 30, 2023 by Claire Leave a Comment

4-year-old-boy-gift-ideasChristmas is just around the corner, and I’m already thinking about gifts for the boys. We use the “want, read, wear, need” system: four gifts per child. Plus a few things in their stockings (including some healthy treats to eat). I’m keen on tech-free toys as I feel that nothing replaces hands-on play experience.

We don’t have too many toys as we don’t have a huge amount of storage space. Our collection has the open-ended basics: building toys, art supplies, and sensory toys. The two olders also have some toy trucks and dinosaurs, lots of stuffies, a unisex dollhouse, a play kitchen, puzzles, and various random things gifted by family through the years. … Read More »

My Favorite Gifts for Pregnant & Postpartum 2022

December 2, 2022 by Claire Leave a Comment

After three kids (and counting? 😛 I always have baby fever around the 2-3 months postpartum mark–hormones are so weird), I have my pregnancy and postpartum favorites down to a science. I’ve spent a lot of money on maternity/postpartum items over the years so I definitely know my way around the shops!

So if I was shopping for a loved one who was pregnant or had a new baby this year–this is what I’d consider getting her. New mamas deserve to be pampered and I would consider most of these brands/items to be the perfect balance between indulgent and functional.

And they’re not baby items 🙂 which although they’re lovely to receive, sometimes it’s really nice to get something just for you in that stage of life!… Read More »

The Best Crunchy-ish Gifts for Babies & Toddlers

December 1, 2022 by Claire Leave a Comment

Since this is already a popular landing page on the blog, I’ve decided to update it annually with my latest toy recommendations/gifts for crunchy babies and toddlers {updated 11/11/2024}..

Whether you’re a crunchy mama yourself, or you’re buying for someone that doesn’t want the latest whizzing plastic gizmo in their kids’ toy room–you’ve stopped by the right place. We are a low-tech, outdoorsy, crunchy family, and I love choosing thoughtful, long-lasting toys made of natural materials for my children.

These are our favorite crunchy gifts for toddlers from over the years, in addition to the ideas I have for my kids this year (at the moment, I have an infant, two and three year boys, plus an older child). If you have any suggestions to add to this list, drop them in the comments! I love learning about new products or companies.

Thoughtful Christmas Traditions & Gifts, Old & New

December 24, 2021 by Claire Leave a Comment

The whole point of Christmas, to me as a child, was the presents. I wasn’t raised in a Christian household so whilst I knew the real reason for the holiday, I didn’t truly understand the significance. And we always did Christmas at home, often without extended family, so togetherness wasn’t a huge part of our celebration either.

My parents didn’t go over the top, but we usually got one large gift plus several smaller ones like books or clothes. Plus lots of gifts from grandparents, aunts and uncles. And we had stuffed stockings, boxes of cookies, and bags of chocolate truffles. The essence of Christmas in the Branigin house was decadence.… Read More »
