Book Review: One Yes At A Time by Susan Strong

December 16, 2024 by Claire Leave a Comment

I was gifted a copy of One Yes At A Time to read and review on Just to Claireify. All opinions expressed are my own.

Did you have a reading goal for this year? Mine was a rather ambitious 25 books. But I actually just finished book 25 this week! Today I’m sharing a review of one of my favorite reads of 2024: One Yes At A Time: How Open Adoption Transformed Our Family, by local author Susan Strong.

Whilst I’m usually a nonfiction reader, I don’t normally reach for autobiographies or memoirs. So I wasn’t sure what to expect when I received One Yes At A Time in the mail. Adoption is a topic that is near and dear to my heart, as my childhood best friend and all of her siblings are adopted. Their house was my second home growing up, especially during difficult seasons of life for my own family (my parents’ lengthy divorce process). Their family was and is an incredible testament to the beauty of building a family through adoption. However, all of their adoptions were closed—by necessity, not by choice. As such, I didn’t know much about what an open adoption looks like before reading One Yes At A Time.… Read More »

Book Review: Secret Sky: The Young Universe by T. Alan Horne

September 6, 2024 by Claire Leave a Comment

I was gifted a copy of Secret Sky: The Young Universe to read and review on Just to Claireify. All opinions expressed are my own.

Billions of years ago on another planet, Skylar is your average 10-year-old living in a medieval village. His family are farmers, far from the opulence and politics of their kingdom’s city. When he comes of age, however, Skylar discovers that his people have a secret, sacred connection to the stars and universe–and loses everyone and everything he cares about that same fateful night.… Read More »

12 Spring Books to Read with Toddlers

April 23, 2024 by Claire Leave a Comment

It’s finally spring and we are SO ready for all the gardening, warm weather sports, playdates, cookouts and more! I love that I can now open the window to air out the house every afternoon. And this weekend we’re headed to the farmer’s market for the first time since August!

When the seasons change, I love to change out the books in the kids’ shelves for seasonally-matched reads. We always have our favorites around–Richard Scarry books and Daniel Tiger among others–and I also like preparing the kids for upcoming activities by reading, too.

Here are a dozen of our favorite spring books for toddlers, including classics and some modern favorites. If you’re headed into fall/winter in your neck of the woods, check out my 12 wintry books to read with little kids post for some inspo :)… Read More »

12 Winter Books to Read with Little Kids

November 13, 2023 by Claire Leave a Comment

winter-books-little-kids-titleWe had our first snow a couple of weeks ago in Minnesota, so it’s safe to say that winter is on the way. How better to celebrate than by reading all the little kids winter books? (Non-lyrical Christmas music is allowed in our household, but nothing truly holly jolly until after Thanksgiving… idk why, it’s just the rule!)

I think we’ve read every book about the seasons and different holidays at our library. We are huge fans of Jan Brett (not so much Beatrix Potter–some of those are a little creepy). My olders also love books about the natural changes that take place as the seasons change, especially when we can get outside and see it in action later!… Read More »

My Favorite 2022 Reads (So Far!)

July 11, 2022 by Claire Leave a Comment

We’re only halfway through the year, but I’ve somehow already met my goal of reading 20 books! I’m rather impressed with myself.

Part of the reason I’ve read so much this year–as I told my therapist–is that I’ve given myself permission to only choose books that feel like self-care to me this year. At this exact moment I love lighthearted nonfiction books about domesticity, femininity, minimalism, organization, and the occasional parenting book.… Read More »
