What is the Environmental Impact of Coffee Pods?

January 30, 2020 by Claire Leave a Comment

coffee-pods-environmental-impact-titleI have a six-month-old, so, coffee… it’s been on my brain a lot lately. I don’t actually own any type of coffee maker at the moment. And you know what’s appealing when you’re short on time in the mornings? A Keurig or Nespresso machine. They were made for busy mums.

Plus, those little pods are recyclable, right? My dad and stepmom have a Nespresso machine. I remember having bags of used pods rattling around in the backseat when I borrowed his car in high school. So they’re environmentally friendly… right… right?… Read More »

Is Eating Tuna Bad for the Environment?

May 30, 2018 by Claire Leave a Comment

There are five main species of tuna, each with a different conservation status. Learn what to look for when shopping for tuna, and why you should care if tuna go extinct. This is one of the food industry topics that I have been asked to write about on the blog. Tuna is a popular fish choice for many people due to its cost and relatively mild flavor. Because of this, I thought that it was a great suggestion and I want to cover it in detail, like I did with shrimp a few weeks ago.

Note: When you Google search “Is eating tuna bad for the environment?”, all of the suggested searches are about how much tuna can be consumed per week due to the accumulation of heavy metals (such as mercury) in its tissues. secondhand-clothes-titleEric and I have bought lots of things secondhand over the past few years: furniture, textbooks, our car, my engagement ring. In the past couple of years I’ve bought more and more secondhand clothes, too. From talking with friends and family and observing their behavior with regards to clothes shopping, I’ve come to realize that there is a lot of mystery and some negative stereotypes associated with buying secondhand. I’d like to talk through them, based on my own experiences!… Read More »

3 Reasons Why You Should Reconsider Eating Shrimp

April 4, 2018 by Claire Leave a Comment

shrimp-environmental-impact-titleA couple of years ago, I was in the kitchen with E, his sister, and her now-fiancé J. We were making coconut milk shrimp stew for dinner, and J–a vegetarian–was heating up leftovers for himself.

We were talking about food, as we do. (E, his mom, and his sister have celiac disease; I have IBS and am lactose and soy intolerant. We think about what we eat a little more than most people.) Our dinner that night came up in conversation, and J claimed that of all meats and seafood, shrimp were “pretty much the worst thing you can eat for the planet.”… Read More »
