And I really can’t take credit for this one as I was inspired by my sister-in-law’s setup in Boston for her kids/my nephews 🙂
Our art and craft supplies have been a downright disaster for a couple of years now. Until recently, they lived in an old baby bathtub on the counter and were constantly spilling out into food prep areas or onto the floor. The scissors were always MIA–usually somewhere in my 1st grader’s bedroom–and clearing out used-up or broken things was an annoying and time-consuming project.
Enter: the IKEA SkÃ¥dis peg board. I loved this when I saw it for three reasons: (1) you can buy infinite combinations of bins/shelves/cups to hang on it, for storing all the bits and bobs kids want to create with; (2) it’s much cheaper than a standing piece of furniture; and (3) vertical storage. Space is at a premium in our house and if I can hang something on the wall/from a closet bar/stacked on top of another piece of furniture, I will do it.
It was fairly easy to wall mount–you do need two screws that don’t come with the board. As of last night, all our drawing stuff, scissors and notebooks and even the random little cups of slime and rolls of washi tape are all neatly stored away in an accessible place. The kids sat down to create this morning and then cleaned up after themselves without prompting which itself is a small miracle!
Pro tip, if you’re going to create this setup, this large hanging pocket is a great size for standard notebooks and coloring books. It’s just a bit bigger than any that come with one of the SkÃ¥dis sets of accessories.
So there you have it–a petite organizational post for corralling your kids’ (or heck, even your own) art/craft/office stuff 🙂
xx Claire
